So today as I'm walking into a building on Sunset in Hollywood with one of my clients, two guys walk out of the elevator toward us, and I looked at one and thought, "He looks familiar--hey, that's David Cook," the new American Idol. So I reached out and shook hands and said, "Congratulations, David. We're really proud of you! Great job." And he said, "Thanks."
And then my client greeted him, and I asked him how much sleep he's gotten (because he just won American Idol less than 24 hours earlier). He said, "About 3 hours." So we talked for a bit in that small lobby while his guard/escort was talking with building security.
And I thought how cool it was that we just happened to enter that lobby at the exact time he stepped off the elevator. (Any time in the previous hours or days, we wouldn't have been able to get close to him, with thousands of fans at the Nokia Theater just the night before, and Paula, Randy and Simon and the myriad of TV cameras and parties and interviews and all.) And the two of us were just standing there talking to a tired David Cook, who was very polite and quite humbled by everything. In fact, along with the fatigue, he seemed like he was still in shock with all of the attention.
We wished him well as we said goodbye, with us forming words out of our mouths and him hearing those words and then responding with words of his own out of his mouth and then those words being heard by us from him to us both in the same language right there with words and handshakes and smiles going around like they do in those buildings in Hollywood. Kinda cool.
Met any celebrities lately? Do share.
PS - Seeing Yoko in New York doesn't count.

I happened to run into the Pillsbury Doughboy in a building lobby in Minneapolis (his home town) a while ago. We didn't have much of a conversation. He kept poking himself in to my finger and giggling like he does in the commercials. It was annoying and it took a while afterwards to wash the sticky off my finger. I've switched to Betty Crocker products for the time being. She lives in Minneapolis, too, but I don't think she does finger giggling.
Waving? Shaking hands? Ringo? David Cook? Clearly, elevator lobbies are THE place to be, with hands ready (and intelligent conversation) for the celebs.
Also, it's very respectable of you to be so courteous to this fine gentleman, being a resident of Murray and all. ;)
And then, of course, he asked if you had a daughter around his age, and you said, "As a matter of fact I DO!" And then he asked for my number... next thing ya know, we're happily dating. Mmmm. Thanks paps. You de best.
I was just today in the house that Ringo lived in from age 5 to 22 in Liverpool. Then I went to John Lennon's Liverpool home and the current residents came out and talked to us and said Yoko Ono was just there two days ago. So maybe I take back what I said about Yoko in New York. Or maybe I keep it because she was here with us. Tricky, eh?
Man, that's so fun. Kelly and I have been on a five year quest now to see a celebrity in a "normal" setting. FIVE years! We've been to New York three times just for that. And here's our father just bumpin into not just any celebrity but THE celebrity of the moment like it aint no thing. Shoot.
P.S. I'm also pretty jealous of Uncle Mike and the dough boy!!!
